Late July is one of the most important moments in the South African rose-growing calendar. As roses rest during the cooler winter months, pruning helps remove old, unproductive growth and prepares each plant to produce strong new stems, healthy foliage and an abundance of spring flowers.

A well-pruned rose may look bare for a few weeks, but beneath the surface it is storing energy for the growing season ahead. Put on your gloves, sharpen your secateurs and give your roses the fresh start they deserve.

CLEAR DEBRIS
LOOSEN COMPACT SOIL
Use the compact hand rake to collect fallen leaves, weeds and small pruning pieces from between rose bushes.
Gently loosen and aerate the soil around the rose’s root zone before adding compost. Work carefully and avoid digging deeply, as this may damage the roots.
PEST CONTROL
WATER DEEPLY
Use a pressure sprayer to apply suitable liquid feeds or registered rose treatments evenly. Always follow the product label and avoid spraying during windy or very hot conditions.
Use the gentle soft-spray or bubble-jet setting to water the soil around each rose bush accurately without disturbing freshly applied compost. 

Late-July pruning is one of the most important steps in the rose-care calendar. Finish the job with clean tools, healthy soil and deep watering, then watch for new shoots as the weather begins to warm.
