What Your Garden Needs This June

Year-Round Fertilising with Atlantic Fertilisers

A thriving garden doesn’t happen by chance – it starts with healthy soil. At Atlantic Fertilisers, we believe that true plant health begins below the surface. That’s why our approach focuses not just on feeding plants, but on nurturing the soil that supports them – all year round.

Why Year-Round Fertilising Matters

In South Africa’s diverse climate, gardens don’t completely switch off, even in winter. While visible growth may slow, important activity continues beneath the soil. Roots are still developing, soil microbes remain active, and plants are quietly preparing for the burst of spring growth.

Consistent, year-round fertilising ensures:

  • Stronger root systems
  • Improved soil structure
  • Better moisture retention
  • Increased resilience to stress, pests, and disease

By maintaining soil health in every season, you create a sustainable environment that supports long-term plant vitality.

Winter Feeding: The Secret to Spring Success

Many gardeners make the mistake of stopping fertilisation in winter – but this is one of the most important times to focus on soil care.

During winter:

  • Nutrient uptake slows, but root growth continues
  • Soil can become depleted due to past seasons of growth
  • Microbial activity needs support to stay balanced

Applying organic fertilisers like Atlantic’s range during winter helps to:

  • Replenish essential nutrients in the soil
  • Improve soil organic matter
  • Encourage beneficial microbial life

💡 The result? When spring arrives, your plants don’t need to “catch up”—they’re already primed for vigorous growth.

Why Organic Fertilisers Make the Difference

Atlantic Fertilisers specialises in organic-based fertilisers, which work with nature rather than against it.

Unlike synthetic fertilisers that deliver a quick nutrient boost (often followed by depletion), organic fertilisers:

  • Release nutrients slowly and steadily
  • Improve soil structure over time
  • Increase microbial activity
  • Enhance water-holding capacity – especially valuable in dry winter regions

Most importantly, organic fertilisers help create living soil – rich in microorganisms that naturally support plant growth.

Feed the Soil, Not Just the Plant

A key principle of sustainable gardening is to feed the soil, not just the plant.

Healthy soil acts as a natural ecosystem, where:

  • Microbes break down organic matter into plant-available nutrients
  • Earthworms aerate the soil and improve drainage
  • Organic matter enhances nutrient retention

When you focus only on feeding the plant, you may get short-term results. But by feeding the soil, you build a self-sustaining system that supports plant health season after season.

Atlantic products are designed with this philosophy in mind – enriching the soil so your plants can thrive naturally.

Winter Benefits of Atlantic Fertilisers

Using Atlantic Fertilisers during winter offers several key advantages:

Improved soil conditioning
Organic matter works into the soil, enhancing structure and preventing compaction.

Stronger roots
Nutrients support root growth even when top growth slows. We recommend Bio Rock Root Builder for this.

Better moisture retention
Healthy soils hold water more effectively – important in drier winter months.

Spring readiness
Your garden is already nourished and balanced when the growing season begins.

Environmentally friendly feeding
Reduced nutrient runoff and improved soil biodiversity.

 Simple Winter Feeding Tips

  • Apply organic fertiliser to beds, lawns, and pots to maintain soil health
  • Focus on slow-release feeding rather than quick fixes
  • Combine fertilising with compost or mulch to protect soil
  • Water lightly after application to activate nutrients

June: Indoor Winter Maintenance, Colour & Scale Control

As winter settles across South Africa, gardens may slow down, but your indoor spaces can come alive with colour, texture, and vibrant foliage. June is the perfect time to shift your focus indoors – protecting, maintaining, and even enhancing your plant collection while preparing for the burst of spring growth ahead. With the right care, your indoor plants won’t just survive winter – they’ll thrive.

Indoor Maintenance Checklist

Fertiliser

Most indoor foliage plants enter a semi-dormant phase during winter, meaning their nutrient needs are reduced. Overfeeding can do more harm than good, so ease off on fertiliser for leafy houseplants.

However, this season is prime growing time for winter and early-spring bloomers. Bulbs like daffodils and hyacinths, as well as favourites such as cyclamen, cineraria, primula, poinsettias, chrysanthemums, and winter begonias, are actively growing and flowering now.

  • Plant bulbs and flowering plants in nutrient-rich soil improved with Bio Rock.
  • Feed every 4–6 weeks with Bio Ocean to support blooms and root development.
  • Water consistently – every 2–3 days depending on indoor conditions.

Did you know? Feeding plants in winter helps build strong root systems, which leads to better flowering and growth in spring.

Light and Air

Light is often limited in winter, especially with shorter days and more overcast weather in many parts of South Africa.

  • Place plants in bright, indirect light – harsh direct sunlight through glass can scorch leaves.
  • Rotate pots weekly to maintain even growth.
  • north-facing window filtered with a sheer curtain is ideal.
  • Avoid placing plants too close to cold draughts or icy window panes in colder regions like Gauteng or the Free State.

Temperature and Humidity

Many houseplants originate from tropical climates and suffer in dry, heated indoor air.

  • Keep plants away from heaters, fireplaces, and air conditioners.
  • Increase humidity by misting regularly, grouping plants together, or placing pots on trays of pebbles and water.
  • In particularly dry Highveld winters, this step is crucial for preventing leaf browning and stress.

Watering

Watering needs drop significantly in winter. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of plant loss during this time.

  • Use tepid or lukewarm water to avoid shocking roots.
  • Water lightly every 7–10 days, depending on your environment.
  • Always check that the top layer of soil has dried out before watering again.

Cleaning

Dust buildup is more common in winter when windows are closed. Dust blocks sunlight and reduces your plant’s ability to photosynthesise.

  • Wipe leaves with a damp cloth (top and underside).
  • Smaller plants can be rinsed with lukewarm water in the shower.

Tip: Clean leaves not only look better—they help plants “breathe” and grow more efficiently.

Repotting

While spring is the main repotting season, June is ideal for assessing plant health.

Watch for signs your plant needs a bigger pot:

  • Roots growing out of drainage holes
  • Smaller new leaves
  • Soil drying out too quickly

If needed, repot into fresh, well-draining soil to give your plant a head start for spring.

Pest Control: Scale Alert

Winter indoor conditions can unfortunately create the perfect environment for pests like scale insects.

What to look for

  • Small brown, tan, or oval bumps on stems and leaves
  • Sticky residue (honeydew) on leaves
  • Black soot-like fungus (sooty mould) developing
  • Yellowing leaves and poor growth

Scale insects feed on plant sap, weakening plants over time and spreading quickly if left untreated.

How to manage scale

  • Isolate affected plants immediately to prevent spread
  • Remove heavily infested leaves and dispose of them (not in compost)
  • For light infestations:
    • Wipe insects off with a cloth
    • Dab with alcohol using a cotton bud
  • For severe infestations:
    • Apply a suitable systemic insecticide

Prevention tip: Healthy, well-fed plants in clean, humid conditions are far less susceptible to pests.

Add Life and Colour to Your Winter Garden

While outdoor growth slows, there’s still plenty you can plant for winter colour in South Africa – both indoors and in sheltered outdoor spaces.

Best plants for winter colour:

Indoors
  • Cyclamen – bright pinks, reds, and whites; thrives in cool indoor conditions
  • Cineraria – bold daisy-like flowers in vibrant purple, blue, and magenta
  • Primula acaulis (Primrose) – cheerful winter blooms in a range of colours
  • Kalanchoe – hardy succulents with long-lasting flowers
  • Peace lilies – elegant white blooms with glossy green leaves
  • African violets – compact plants with delicate blooms perfect for windowsills
  • Cymbidium orchids – dramatic, long-lasting winter flowers

Sheltered Outdoor Colour (frost-free or mild areas like the Western Cape coast)

  • Pansies & violas – classic winter bedding plants
  • Snapdragons – great for vertical colour
  • Calendula – bright orange and yellow winter sunshine
  • Petunias (mild climates) – ongoing colour in warmer regions
  • Alyssum – low-growing with sweet fragrance

Interesting fact: Many winter-flowering plants actually prefer cooler temperatures, which helps extend their blooming period compared to summer.
